In 2011, a researcher named Glenn Fortenbaugh strapped reflective markers onto professional and amateur baseball hitters at the University of Miami, lit them with a high-speed motion-capture rig, and recorded what the swing actually does. Not what hitting coaches say. What the bones do.
The finding was quiet and devastating. The best hitters did not lunge at the ball. They rotated.
Keep that in mind while we walk through three sports, three independent research groups, and one unanimous answer, because at the end we are going to line golf up next to them, and the comparison is not flattering.
Baseball: stay back and turn
Walk up to any batting cage in America and listen to the coach. You will hear two words over and over: stay back. Do not lunge. Do not let your head and weight drift toward the pitcher. Hold your center, load the back hip, and rotate.
Fortenbaugh's motion-capture work put numbers behind the cliche. Elite hitters generate power through trunk rotation sequenced from the ground up: hips first, then torso, then the hands arriving last. The barrel is the final link in a chain, not the first move.
Now read that as a golfer. The exact sequence a hitting coach drills for a living, rotation around a stable center with the implement arriving last, is the thing a modern golf instructor trains out of you and replaces with a lateral shift toward the target. Same human. Same hips. Same arc of a club or bat through a ball at speed. One sport teaches you to turn around your spine. The other teaches you to leave it.
Football: "arm thrower" is an insult
Watch a slow-motion replay of any NFL quarterback and ignore the arm. The arm is a decoy. The throw starts at the back foot pushing into the ground, drives up through the hips, rotates the trunk, and only then unspools into the shoulder, elbow, and wrist. The big slow segments build the speed. The small fast segments deliver it.
Coaches call a passer who throws with just his arm "an arm thrower," and they say it as an insult, because that shoulder will not survive a season. An arm thrower is an athlete who skipped the ground-up sequence and asked the small muscles to do the big muscles' job. Short-term velocity, long-term injury.
That is precisely what the modern golf swing's hand-timed "release" asks of a weekend amateur: fire the small, fast muscles to rescue a sequence the swing model already broke. The quarterback who does this gets benched. The golfer who does it gets a lesson package and a sore back.
Martial arts: the physics is not optional
In striking sports, wrong mechanics do not cost you distance. They cost you the fight, so the physics gets honest fast.
In 2017, Gavagan and Sayers published a kinematic study of roundhouse kicks in PLoS One. The force in a trained striker's kick does not come from the leg. It comes from the whole body rotating around its own vertical axis, transmitting force from the ground, through the hip, into the limb that lands last. The leg is the messenger, not the engine.
One axis. One pivot. Ground up. The smallest, fastest segment delivers force the big segments built.
One law under all of it
This is not three coincidences. In 1993, Putnam's paper in the Journal of Biomechanics looked across throwing and striking sports at once and described a single principle: proximal-to-distal sequencing. Big segments near the center move first and slow down; smaller segments farther out move later and fast; energy flows outward through the chain in order. The bat, the ball, the foot: different tools, identical engine.
Now line up modern golf instruction against that unanimous answer.
It teaches a lateral weight shift toward the target, which means your center moves during the swing. It teaches two pivot points instead of one. And it teaches an active hand-and-arm release, the small fast muscles doing work the big slow ones are built for.
On every single axis where baseball, throwing, and striking agree, modern golf instruction does the opposite. The science of human movement is unanimous in every rotational sport on earth except the one that sells the most lessons.
The swing was hiding in plain sight
My father, Kevin Keding, spent forty years teaching a single-axis, ground-up golf swing on a public course in Wilmington, North Carolina. He took his three sons to scratch without a PGA lesson between us. When he finally read the sports-science literature, he found his swing described everywhere: in Fortenbaugh's hitters, in the quarterback's chain, in a study of roundhouse kicks written by scientists who had never met him.
Every other sport already taught you this motion. He just gave it back to golf.
