Golf Lower Back Pain Is Not Your Age. It's Your Swing Model.

Ask any group of regular golfers how their backs feel on a Monday morning and watch the room nod.

Low-back pain is one of the most common complaints in golf, and it is not a rare, freak-injury problem. It is treated as the everyday tax of playing the game. Getting older, they tell you. Do some stretches. Ice it after the round.

Here is what the biomechanics research actually says: the sore back is not the price of golf. It is the price of a specific swing model, and the mechanism is traceable, link by link, through your body.

Your body is built as one chain

In 2006, Stuart Kibler and his colleagues, writing in Sports Medicine, described the human body's power system as a kinetic chain: a coordinated sequence of body segments, each one feeding force to the next. The legs push into the ground. The ground pushes back. That force runs up through the hips, into the torso, out through the arms, and into whatever you are swinging.

Their key finding is worth memorizing: stability at the center is what lets force pass cleanly from the ground to the hand.

And the links are not separate parts bolted together. In 2016, Wilke and colleagues published a review in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation on myofascial force transmission. Plain version: your muscles are wired into long chains by connective tissue called fascia. Your calf is connected to your hamstring is connected to your lower back is connected to your lats. Not as a metaphor. As anatomy you can trace.

This is why the body wants to move as a unit. It already is one.

Now look at what modern instruction asks you to do

The swing taught at virtually every academy is built on two centers. You load your weight onto your trail leg going back, then slide it laterally onto your lead leg coming down, shifting toward the target before you rotate. Two centers means two axes: one spot on the way back, a different spot on the way down, with a slide in between.

The kinetic chain runs cleanest when it rotates around a single, stable center. A lateral slide is the opposite of stability. It is the center itself moving.

Energy that should have climbed the chain leaks out sideways into that slide. And energy never disappears. It just gets paid for somewhere.

Where the bill lands

When you slide laterally and then have to square the club, your sequence is already off. The hips and torso did not hand off cleanly, because the center moved. Something has to make up the difference, late, by hand.

That something is your lower back, bending and twisting to deliver what the sequence should have delivered on its own.

Remember the fascia research: your body is one connected chain, so forcing one segment to slide independently pulls on every link attached to it. The lumbar spine sits right at the junction where all that force collects. A clean kinetic chain rotates the spine. A broken one bends it under load, then asks it to twist anyway.

The sore lower back on Monday morning is not weakness and it is not age. It is the spine paying the bill the sequence left unpaid, eighty or ninety times a round.

The obvious objection: tour players swing this way and they are fine. Mostly true, and the reason is the part the lesson never mentions.

A tour professional has been building his body around that swing since childhood, twenty to twenty-five years of adaptation. He practices six to eight hours a day. He has a swing coach, a biomechanist with 3D capture, a physiotherapist, and a strength staff keeping his hips and spine ready to absorb the loads that swing produces. When something starts to break, he catches it early and rests.

You have a job, one Saturday morning a week, and a tee time. You were sold the swing. You were not sold the staff that keeps it from breaking the man who uses it.

The alternative is one axis

The fix is not a stretching routine layered on top of a broken motion. It is a swing built the way the research says the body generates rotational power: one axis, one pivot, one ground-up sequence, with no manufactured lateral shift for your spine to rescue. It is the same motion every other rotational sport already teaches.

That is the swing my father, Kevin Keding, taught for forty years in Wilmington, North Carolina, and the one I later verified with motion-capture analysis: more clubhead speed, with visibly less load running through the spine. His students play four hours of golf and drive home without ice on their lower backs.

Your back is not failing golf. The swing you were handed is failing your back. Those are different problems, and only one of them is fixable with ice.
