The average male amateur swings a driver around 93 miles per hour. The PGA Tour average sits around 113 to 115. That is a gap of more than twenty percent.
Now look at the two populations. Tour players are athletes, but they are not twenty percent stronger than the general golfing public in any measurable sense, and plenty of them are visibly smaller than the amateurs they outdrive by fifty yards. Whatever is producing that gap, it is mostly not muscle.
It is order.
The order energy is supposed to travel in
Rotational power in every sport that has it works the same way. Energy enters at the ground and moves up the body through a chain of segments, and each segment hands its speed to the next by slowing down.
Ground pushes back against the feet. Legs drive rotation into the pelvis. The pelvis accelerates, reaches peak speed, and then decelerates, and that deceleration is what launches the torso. The torso peaks and decelerates, launching the arms. The arms peak and decelerate, launching the club. The club arrives at the ball travelling faster than anything that moved it.
This is the kinematic sequence, and the counterintuitive part is the braking. Speed is not created by everything accelerating together. It is created by a wave of accelerations and deliberate decelerations moving up the body in order. A pitcher does it. A tennis player serving does it. A hitter does it. A golfer is supposed to do it.
Each segment gives its speed away by slowing down. If nothing slows down, nothing speeds up, and you are left swinging with whatever your arms can produce on their own.
Where amateurs leak it, in order of cost
Leak one: the downswing starts at the top
The most expensive error in golf. The transition begins with the shoulders and arms rather than with the ground and the legs. The moment the upper body initiates, the sequence is running backwards: the torso is accelerating while the pelvis is still accelerating too, so there is no deceleration gradient for energy to flow down.
The felt experience of this is effort without result. You are working extremely hard and the ball goes 210 yards, because you are producing speed with the smallest muscles in the chain instead of receiving it from the largest.
This is also why "swing easier" is such reliably good advice and such useless instruction. Swinging easier removes the arm-driven initiation and lets the sequence fire in order. It works. It just does not tell anyone why it works, so it never survives the round.
Leak two: nothing brakes
Golfers are taught to accelerate through the ball and to keep turning to a full finish, and both instructions quietly discourage the deceleration the chain depends on. If the pelvis never stops rotating, it never hands anything to the torso.
Watch a long drive competitor at impact. The lower body has effectively posted up and stopped. That stop is not the end of the swing, it is the mechanism of the swing.
Leak three: casting
The wrist angle between the lead arm and the club shaft is stored energy, and it is the last link in the chain. Released early, at the top or shortly after, it is spent before the clubhead reaches the zone where speed matters. Every golfer has heard about casting. Fewer have heard that casting is usually a symptom rather than a cause: when the upper body initiates the downswing, releasing the wrists early is the only way the club can catch up to the ball at all. Fix the order and the cast often resolves without ever being addressed directly.
The structural problem underneath all three
Here is the part the speed-training industry does not address. Every leak above is a sequencing failure, and sequencing failures are timing failures. In a swing where the body also has to shift laterally from one rotational center to another during the downswing, you are asking the golfer to time two things at once: the transfer between axes, and the wave of accelerations up the chain.
Two simultaneous timing tasks, executed in under a quarter of a second, refreshed only by whatever practice volume you can find. That is why speed is inconsistent even in golfers who have been shown the correct sequence. They can produce it. They cannot reproduce it, because the motion carries more timing load than a recreational schedule can maintain.
Take away the lateral shift and one of the two timing tasks disappears. The chain still has to fire in order, but it is firing around a fixed center rather than around a center that is itself in motion. This is the argument in Golf's Great Lie, and speed is where it shows up fastest for most golfers, because sequencing errors cost speed immediately and visibly.
What to work on this week
Start the downswing from the ground. Before your backswing finishes, feel pressure move into the lead foot. The arms should feel like passengers. They will feel late. They are not late, they were early before.
Post and stop. Let the lower body brake through impact instead of spinning continuously. The finish will still happen. It is a consequence, not a target.
Stop trying to hold the angle. Casting is downstream. Fix the initiation and check whether it is still there.
Measure it. Any launch monitor, even a cheap one. Sequencing changes show up in clubhead speed within a session, which makes this one of the few areas in golf where you can get honest feedback quickly.
